Description
This is the first arrangement for orchestra based on those I did for Wind Band featuring memorable melodies from operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan.
The four here are taken from “H.M.S. Pinafore” and “Mikado.” None of the students I taught in my last school had heard of Sullivan. The reception of the Wind Band arrangement was excellent and it was equally well received at the concert with many coming up afterwards to say how it had brought back fond memories of school productions.
I had staged many of these operettas during my teaching career and they always went down well with students and audiences alike.
There are definite challenges within the arrangement but there are also easier parts written such that players of a wide range of abilities can participate. Care should be taken, of course, with the tempo changes.
All tempi markings are given but, where necessary, some relaxation could be observed at times where the technical demands require it, providing that the character of the music can be retained.
I trust you and your orchestra will enjoy the melodies and the arrangement.
