Description
This analysis of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony starts by providing some background information as to the composer and the historical and political circumstances under which the work was conceived.
The analysis then proceeds to deal with each movement in turn and in some detail, with musical excerpts to support the points being made and to help the reader / student follow the work and its musical content.
This is complex piece of music but it is well worth the effort to get to know it and listen to it more than once. It is deservedly one of the composer’s most popular works and there are many fine recordings of it.
